The
Ground Work
Program

A structured community sport and wellbeing program for veterans and first responders. From first session to full community integration.

Putting in the Ground Work

When a veteran loses connection to community, no amount of clinical intervention replaces the feeling of belonging somewhere. The Ground Work Program rebuilds that connection through structured, progressive physical activity, moving veterans from isolation into an established local community over 12 months.

Each participant is paired with a qualified coach and a dedicated peer mentor from day one. The program uses grappling-based movement within a safe, supervised, and values-driven training environment to progressively rebuild physical confidence, social connection, and independent community participation.

The 12-Month Journey

Four Phases of Reintegration

Phase 01 · Months 1 to 3

Foundation

One-on-one coaching in a private setting. Learning to move safely, building physical confidence, and forming a relationship with a dedicated peer mentor who stays with you for the duration.

Phase 02 · Months 4 to 6

Integration

A supported transition into regular community classes. Training alongside others, developing routine, and beginning to experience the social connection that keeps people coming back.

Phase 03 · Months 7 to 9

Independence

The veteran becomes a contributor, supporting new participants entering the program while deepening their own practice and sense of purpose.

Phase 04 · Months 10 to 12

Community

Self-sustained participation as an independent community member. No longer a program participant; a belonging member of a local club with a peer network built to last.

From Our Community

“Scott Steer and the Veteran Grappling team have done a lot of amazing work within the community that I have been able to not only witness but also receive. During those periods where I was at my lowest, Scott’s support and that of the Veteran Grappling team have made a massive difference in my life and I’m sure they have done so in many others lives too.”
